Multi-car pile up causes delays for Gatwick passengers
A major stretch of motorway between Gatwick and London remains closed after an eight vehicle pile-up on the M23.
Two lorries and six other vehicles crashed on the northbound stretch of the motorway this morning.
One of the cars overturned and the diesel tank of a HGV, which was also involved, has ruptured spilling fuel across the road.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash at 11.20am.
One person was taken to hospital with severe injuries.
As a result of the cash, the M23 northbound is closed from the Gatwick turnoff at junction 9 towards junction 8 for the M25.
Surrey police said they will shortly open one lane to allow trapped traffic passed the crash site, but that stretch of the motorway will remain closed indefinitely for road repairs.
