NAACP issues update on American Airlines travel advisory
Since issuing a travel advisory for American Airlines a month ago, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) says it has been inundated with nearly 600 calls on the subject.
Nearly 10% of these came from current or former American Airlines employees, it said.
The group issued a travel advisory on October 24, 2017 urging African Americans to ‘exercise caution’ when flying with American Airlines.
It noted several ‘disturbing incidents’ of ‘disrespectful, discriminatory or unsafe conditions’ when issuing the advisory.
Some of the new testimonies also cited inappropriate treatment on three other major airlines.
Incidents recorded by NAACP staffers as told by cutomers include a young black woman being deplaned so her seat could accommodate a white man’s dog, and a comment by a gate agent to a person of color that ‘American is for Americans.’
In giving the latest update there is no change in the status to the advisory and it continues to seek testimony from affected passengers and employees.
The NAACP continues to seek ‘productive dialog’ with the airline, it said.
