Naked Chef takes some flak
UK: Celebrity cook accused of “nimbyism” after campaigns
Naked Chef Jamie Oliver has been called a hypocrite after campaigning against airport expansion – in spite of the fact that he uses air transport around twice a month.
As reported, the celebrity cook has been using his famous image to lead campaigns against the expansion of airports, especially Stansted, which lies in the heart of his beloved Essex.
However, trade unions are now criticising his “nimby” attitude after discovering that he flew to destinations including the United States, Australia and Japan last year. In all, he took 24 flights in 12 months.
A spokesman for the pro-expansion group Freedom to Fly told the Daily Express: “We respect Jamie’s right to protest but it is a bit strange that he seeks to deny the right to fly to some people while taking so many flights himself.”
Jamie’s mother answered: “Of course Jamie flies – we all do. That is why if expansion must go ahead then an off-shore airport must be considered.”
