NCL ship breakdown likely caused by whale-size collision
The technical breakdown of a cruise ship outside New York was likely the result of a collision with a 45-feet whale.
The Norwegian Breakaway became stuck on the Hudson River on Sunday with propulsion and steering problems causing a three-hour delay.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration examined the carcass of a female Sei whale but could not confirm if it had been alive when the collision happened.
The NOAA had earlier received a report that the NCL cruise ship had a whale stuck to its bow.
"At this point, we just don’t know if it was the cause of the ship’s delay," said NOAA investigating officer Jeffrey Ray.
He said the investigation is still ongoing.
