New app warns of avalanche risk
A new mobile app warning of the risk of avalanches in ski resorts in France and Andorra has been launched by the French weather agency.
The Meteo Ski app uses weather data and information on snow quality and depth at each resort to determine the likelihood of an avalanche.
Users select their location and are giving details reports on conditions on different areas of the resort.
Avalanche risk is measured on a scale of one to five, which is consistent with in-resort ratings.
The free app uses data supplied by more than 100 ski patrol staff.
At the moment, it’s only available in French but an English version is planned.
There have been several fatal avalanches in France this season, including one in Les Deux Alpes which claimed the lives of three people, including two schoolchildren.
