Steve Griffiths has been promoted to chief operating officer at Virgin Atlantic.
He replaces Lyell Strambi, who moved to Australia at the end of last year.
Griffiths moves up from his current position as director of engineering and his new role as COO will encompass engineering, operations, airports, cabin crew, product and cargo.
Chief executive Steve Ridgway said: "Steve has progressed rapidly through Virgin Atlantic and has displayed great leadership within our engineering team.
“He has a first rate understanding of what makes Virgin Atlantic tick and what the issues are going forward at a time of unprecedented challenge. He is a great asset to have within the leadership team."
Griffiths joined the carrier in 1995 and has held his current role since July 2007. He takes up the new job from March 16.
