Italian authorities want tourists to stay on Vesuvius while locals move away

Politicians in Italy have come up with a great way to make sure residents are not affected next time Mount Vesuvius erupts – by encouraging them to rent their homes out to tourists.

The Campagnia region, according to The Times, is desperately short of accommodation for tourists, so such a scheme would solve two problems at the same time. The newspaper reports that residents are being offered £18,000 to move away from the danger zone – and officials believe some 1,000 families may take up the offer in the first year, with 600,000 people relocating over the next 15 years.

The Times quotes the Italian newspaper Il Messagero thus: “Some visitors might enjoy the thrill of sleeping on a volcano”, adding that sleeping on Sicily’s Mount Etna, where there are frequent tremors, is an established tourist attraction.

However, the head of the Vesuvius observatory told the newspaper that an eruption would hurl a 20km column of poisonous gas into the air, and that lava, ash and gas would destroy everything in their path. The mountain is, the newspaper points out, constantly monitored by seismologists …
