New Gatwick security scare
Uk: Newspaper reporter claims to have boarded jet carrying machine gun
Authorities at Gatwick airport have launched a massive security review after newspaper reporters managed to smuggle guns on board a plane.
Sunday’s News of the World claims one of its reporters boarded a jet on Thursday, after hiding in the back of a catering lorry. He was carrying a replica machine gun and a pistol. According to the newspaper, the driver of the lorry, who had allegedly agreed to help the reporter “out of concern over the lax security at the airport” was checked, but not the lorry itself was not.
Roger Cato, the managing director of BAA Gatwick, reportedly told the paper: “We take the security of the airport and the safety of our passengers and staff extremely seriously. With the police we have launched an immediate investigation into claims that a News of the World reporter was helped to gain access to secure areas of the airport by a member of staff from an airline catering company. We will be considering with the Department of Transport whether, in the light of the newspaper’s claims, there should be a further review of these procedures.”
