New ‘hospital hotels’ to accommodate NHS patients
Private hotels will provide accommodation for recovering NHS patients under new plans to ease pressure on hospital beds.
The hotels will provide rooms with en-suite facilities, television and room service for the elderly, new mums and stroke patients, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.
The proposal being reviewed by NHS England, the new body responsible for recommending how local doctors’ group should provide for their patients, is based on a system widely used in Scandinavia where privately run hospitals situated n the ground of hospitals are staffed by nurses and provide access to doctors if patients need urgent treatment.
The cost of accommodating a patient in a hotel, even one staffed by trained carers and fitted with medical equipment, would be significantly lower, according to advocates of the scheme, said the Telegraph.
In the US, Marriott and Hilton already operate hotels for patients and families attending nearby medical facilities.
