New in the air: Pay fees just once a year

Thursday, 04 Jun, 2013 0

Among the deluge of fees coming from the airlines, United Airlines has taken a step to make things simpler, and perhaps even less expensive. It yesterday launched a subscription service that lets customers pay an annual fee for Economy Plus seating and checked baggage.

Subscriptions may be given as gifts or perks by friends, employers, and even travel agents.

An annual subscription to Economy Plus, which offers more legroom on most aircraft, starts at $499, and customers can select the region and the number of travelers on their subscription.

The checked baggage subscription starts at $349. Customers may tailor their subscription by choosing up to two bags, the number of travelers, and preferred geographic region.

United also now will allow customers to use MileagePlus miles to purchase an annual memberships in the United Club, good at all 49 Club locations, and at Copa Clubs and participating Star Alliance airport clubs worldwide.

There’s an initiation fee of $50 or 7,000 miles for all new United Club memberships; after that, one-year membership prices start at $500 or 65,000 miles for general MileagePlus members, with discounts for Premier members.
