New Orleans scores another record year for cruise tourism
New Orleans recorded another record year for cruise tourism, with its fourth straight year surpassing one million cruisers annually.
In 2017 the Port of New Orleans handled 1,150,172 cruise passengers and port management expects more growth through 2018 as larger ships arrive.
"These year-end results validate the continued appeal of cruising from the Crescent City and reflect our commitment to excellence," said Brandy Christian, port president and CEO.
"We expect additional growth in 2018 and will continue to provide high-level service that complements New Orleans’ natural hospitality and vibrant energy."
Norwegian Cruise Line is replacing the Norwegian Pearl with the larger Norwegian Breakaway in November 2018.
At a 4,000 passenger capacity, it will be the largest vessel ever to sail from New Orleans.
Royal Caribbean is also returning to the port with the deployment of Vision of the Seas on seasonal seven-night cruises.
The port also says a strong cruise market is a boon for local hoteliers and other businesses.
It says about 80% of cruisers are from out of state and about 60% of these spend an average two days in the city pre- or post-cruise.
That adds up to more than 112,000 room nights in hotels, the port says.
