New York most expensive city for luxury hotel stays

Reinforcing popular perception, New York is the most expensive city for luxury hotel stays, according to a new survey.

A survey conducted by Luxury-Hotels.com found the top seven priciest hotels in the US were all in Manhattan, with the Ritz Carlton and the Mandarin Oriental out in front, with both costing a minimum nightly rate of $995 for a double room.

Conducted last month, the survey looked at the cheapest available rate for a stay in October at US cities with a population exceeding 500,000.

The Baccarat Hotel & Residences came in third most expensive at $990 per night, followed by the New York St Regis.

The Montage Beverly Hills and Las Vegas’ SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand, at $800 and $789 respectively, were the only properties outside New York to make the top ten.

The survey covered minimum average rates at US hotels, but even the most expensive rooms at these properties fall way short of the nation’s most lavish hotel suite.

The just opened penthouse at The Mark Hotel, also in the Big Apple, claims to be the most expensive in the country at $75,000 per night.

For that eye-watering price tag, you get 12,000 square feet of living space including five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a dining room seating 24, and a rooftop terrace with views of Central Park.

The top ten luxury hotel stays in the Luxury-Hotels.com survey were as follows:

1. Mandarin Oriental (New York) $995
1. The Ritz-Carlton Central Park (New York) $995
3. Baccarat Hotel & Residences (New York) $990
4. The St. Regis (New York) $945
5. The Plaza Hotel (New York) $893
6. The Peninsula (New York) $845
7. Park Hyatt (New York) $834
8. Montage Beverly Hills (Los Angeles) $800
9. SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand (Las Vegas) $789
10. The Lowell (New York) $785
