New Zealand heading for America’s Cup triumph
The America’s Cup could be on its way back to New Zealand after the Kiwi boat continued to dominate struggling Oracle Team USA on San Francisco Bay.
Emirates Team New Zealand has extended its lead to 6-1 after the latest series of races.
The Larry Ellison-backed Oracle was docked two points for illegal modifications before the event and is effectively on minus one.
The first team to nine wins will claim the 162-year-old America’s Cup.
Ben Ainslie, Britain’s four-time Olympic champion, was drafted in for his Cup debut on Oracle this week but he could not compensate for Oracle’s lack of pace upwind.
The Kiwis are now just three wins from reclaiming the Cup they last won in Auckland in 2000.
The winners of the event earn the right to choose the format and venue of the next America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in international sport.
