New Zealand number one at UK tourism awards
New Zealand has once again been voted the number one long-haul travel destination by British travellers.
The annual Reader’s Travel Awards took in feedback from readers of the Guardian, its affiliated website and the Observer – canvassing opinions about the appeal of foreign holiday destinations.
It found that New Zealand came up trumps for the second time in three years. In 2007, the country came fourth behind Cambodia (1st), Vietnam (2nd) and Japan (3rd).
New Zealand tourism minister Damien O’Connor said that the appeal of the country was rooted in unrelenting efforts by its tourism industry to provide a world-class experience to holidaymakers.
“Only by offering authentic and unique visitor experiences and delivering high-levels of customer service will the tourism industry be able to remain competitive and deliver on the goals set out in the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015,” he said.
British tourists are currently New Zealand’s second-largest tourist market, with almost 290,000 visitors from the UK travelling to the country in the year to August 2008.
