New Zealand’s TranzAlpine rail service resumes in early July

Sunday, 22 Jun, 2020 0

KiwiRail plans to restart TranzAlpine scenic train services from early next month.

The service between Christchurch and Greymouth will resume on July 4.

"We’re conscious of how important this service is to the West Coast economy and we’re looking forward to bringing visitors to the Coast again, allowing them to see the snow-capped Southern Alps along the way," said KiwiRail CEO Greg Miller.

The rail service has been suspended since March 22.

It is heavily reliant on foreign tourists but KiwiRail is tapping domestic travellers to help support the service.

"This will be an ideal time for New Zealand families to try something new. Covid-19 has taken a heavy toll on tourism everywhere and unfortunately, like other tourism providers, KiwiRail and the communities we serve have suffered the impact," Miller said.

TranzAlpine will run on weekends during July and August, and daily during the school holidays from July 6-17.

It is offering a special one way rate of $75.
