Newest airport terminal in US opens in south Florida
The newest airport terminal in the US opened at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers.
The 28-gate terminal is one of the first in the US to incorporate security equipment and procedures into its design.
The $438 million airport includes a two-story terminal, a new taxiway and related roadways.
Said Robert M. Ball, executive director of the Lee County Port Authority that operates the airport:
“A strong message was that the airport should reflect the character of the region. When people step off a plane and into the airport, they should immediately know they’re in Southwest Florida.”
Seashell accents and native vegetation help give the airport a Florida feel.
The new terminal has the capacity for 10 million passengers a year. The old airport served more than 6.7 million passengers last year.
