The next cruise on a ship hit by giant waves with the death of two passengers has been cancelled.

Cyprus-based Louis Cruises has taken the measure to allow for repairs to be carried out on the 1,350-passenger Louis Majesty.

The cruise ship returned safely to the port of Barcelona last night and arrangements have been made for all passengers to fly home today, the company said.

“We cancelled the next cruise so as to enable for repairs to take place for the safety and comfort of our passengers,” a spokesman said.

“She will undergo these repairs the next couple of days in Barcelona. She will then sail to Genoa and on March 12 she will resume her normal operations.”

Louis Majesty was hit by “abnormal waves” while sailing from Barcelona to Genoa (See previous TravelMole story).

“As a result, the windows in a public area on deck five on the forward part of the vessel smashed resulting to the fatal injury of two passengers of German and Italian nationality while 14 more passengers suffered light injuries,” the company said.

“Louis Cruises extends its sincere condolences to the families of the two victims and its full support to the injured passengers while expressing its deep sorrow for the incident.”

The ship was on a 12-day cruise from Genoa and Marseilles calling at Tangiers, Casablanca, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Cadiz, Cartagena, Barcelona and was due to return to Genoa today (March 4).
