Niagara convention center moving ahead
The Canadian government committed $35 million to the construction of a new Niagara Convention and Civic Center.
“This project, along with other federal infrastructure investments in Ontario, such as wastewater treatment improvements in Hamilton Harbour, and improvements to the York, Brampton and Mississauga transit systems, contributes to sustainable communities,” said Rob Nicholson, Attorney General of Canada.
The proposed Niagara Convention and Civic Centre project, located in Niagara Falls, involves a facility with 100,000 square feet of exhibition space and 30,000 square feet of meeting space.
The facility hopes to attract approximately 500,000 visitors per year to the Niagara Region, officials say.
Once completed, the project is expected to be a model for environmental sustainability and will seek Energy and Environmental Design certifications.
Details and a time table are still pending, officials say, but the federal funding commitment is viewed as vital to the success of the project.
