Nightclub fire kills dozens in Goa
A fire at a nightclub has claimed the lives of at least 25 people in Goa, India.
It included 21 staff and reportedly some foreign nationals.
Eyewitnesses spoke of panic as flames quickly engulfed the popular venue, which is situated close to a beach.
Police initially said that the cause was likely a gas cylinder exploding in the kitchen, but Goa’s chief minister now says inquiries are exploring the use of indoor fireworks.
The venue was packed at the time.
Police said four people have been arrested, which includes the manager and an arrest warrant for the nightclub’s owner was issued.
Goa is India’s main beach destination for foreign tourists and attracts millions of travellers annually.
Goa’s chief minister Pramod Sawant added that six people are in hospital.
A full investigation is underway, he said.
“Those found responsible will face most stringent action under the law – any negligence will be dealt with firmly.”
