Nori’s farewell overseas trip perhaps?

It appears that Americans experienced some culture Sydney style on Thursday in Santa Monica and Hollywood, with performances from Priscilla Queen of the Desert, as part of Australia Week promotions in the US and NSW Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation in attendance.

Tourism NSW was running a consumer and media promotion in Santa Monica, California yesterday with outgoing Minster Nori at the cultural helm to entice Americans to visit Sydney and see Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical, with Ms Nori saying, “There is a replica “Priscilla Bus” in Santa Monica’s 3rd promenade promoting a sweepstakes and 5-day holiday package with Qantas”.

“Tony Sheldon and other performers from the musical will also be in costume at the promotion,” she added.

Ms Nori said that in the evening, over 600 influential travel, film and entertainment media and celebrities will attend a special film screening of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, followed by a performance from the stage show, adding, “The stars of the musical will perform in outrageous costumes designed by Oscar winning designers Lizzie Gardiner and Tim Chappel at Paramount Studios in Hollywood”.

Tourism NSW is a major sponsor of the Priscilla Film Extravaganza, organised by Tourism Australia, with Ms Nori saying that Tourism NSW would also hold an event for key travel trade and media in New York as part of the promotion.

She added, “In a reciprocal arrangement, the NY & Company’s tourism booth in Times Square will distribute Sydney maps and guides during Australia Week, while our Sydney booths will distribute New York guides.  “Culture is a key highlight of the Sydney holiday experience – along with our fantastic dining, harbour, shopping, iconic beaches and national parks –that’s why there’s no place in the world like Sydney.

The USA is a key international tourism market for NSW with over 280,000 visitors to the State last year. This represents 10 per cent of total international visitors to NSW. Visitors from the USA spent $492 million in the State last year.

G’Day USA: Australia Week 2007 is a festival from January 11 –20, 2007, showcasing all things Australian, including food and wine, travel, film, arts, culture, fashion and business and is produced by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Tourism Australia, Austrade, and Qantas.
