NRMA launches online travel platform for Australian over 50’s
Baby Boomers in Australia are embracing solo travel, with over 50’s more comfortable travelling alone than younger generations.
That’s the view from a new survey released by the National Roads and Motorists’ Association, which found nearly three quarters (72%) of Baby Boomers in New South Wales happy to take a holiday alone compared to just 59% of Generation X (38-49 years).
In the last three years 34% of older travellers had taken a solo holiday, eclipsing the 27% of the Generation X segment which had done the same.
In the coming 12 months 26% of mature travellers will plan their next solo trip, compared to just 22% in the Generation X and Y age range.
NRMA conducted the inaugural study to complement the launch of its new Living Well Navigator website targeted specifically at older Australians.
The website offers travel resources and exclusive offers for holidays at home and overseas.
"There is definitely a trend towards older Australians travelling alone – whether it’s within Australia or overseas and Living Well Navigator is a resource they can use to find information," says Living Well Navigator Ambassador Dawn Fraser.
"Living Well Navigator has a whole section called the Solo Travellers Club, aimed at those who are planning on a solo adventure, but would like to meet up with a group of people along the way and avoid common single travel supplement fees."
Fellow Living Well Navigator Ambassador Deborah Hutton believes it will be an important resource to connect with like-minded older travelers nationwide.
"It’s about bettering your experience in your ‘third age’ and having a dedicated tool for health and well-being, travel, work and volunteering or simply getting around, is invaluable," said Deborah.
