New Zealand adventure tour operator Active Adventures has been acquired by a consortium of companies led by Australian private equity firm Blue Sky Alternative Investments.

The consortium consists of co-founder and CEO of Virgin Blue and investment banker Scott Malcolm, the company said.

Details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Active Adventures was established more than 20 years ago and operates adventure and hiking trips in New Zealand, Australia, South America, Nepal and Europe.

It has a staff of 20 and about 60 guides worldwide.

The company’s major shareholders, Robin Wiseley and Michelle Trapski, will join a new board of directors along with members from Blue Sky.

"This new partnership will own and operate this company into the future, and it’s a very exciting future. Over the last four years we’ve enjoyed amazing growth, more than doubling our turnover, adding new destinations to our business and our new brand New Zealand Walking tours, launched in April. The company has grown to a point where we were able to attract the skills and investment capabilities of our new partners," Wiseley said.
