Olympics puts off those who usually holiday at home
UK holidaymakers who would have preferred to holiday at home are heading overseas this year to avoid the Olympic Games, according to yet more research.
According to research by foreign exchange service Travelex, around 10 million will attempt to avoid the chaos heading to Europe, with Spain named as the most popular destination.
One in six Brits – 14 per cent – would have preferred to holiday in the UK were it not for the Olympics, while 3 per cent are heading abroad because they couldn’t get a ticket.
The most popular reasons for leaving are escaping the visiting crowds and avoiding the blanket coverage on TV and a dislike of sport.
People living in and around London, Weymouth and Windsor were the most likely to say they would be going abroad, while those in Northern Ireland and Wales were the least likely.
Elvin Eldic from Travelex told the Daily Mail: "While the Olympics should be a fantastic spectacle it seems a large number of Brits would prefer to watch it from afar."
