One dead after ride breaks apart at Ohio State Fair
One person was killed and seven others injured due to a malfunctioning amusement park ride on the opening day of the Ohio State fair.
One man died and at least three remain in a critical condition after being thrown off the Fire Ball ride, said Columbus fire battalion chief Steve Martin.
According to video footage taken, part of the swinging and spinning ride broke apart, throwing several people to the ground.
Governor John Kasich said a full investigation would start and ordered the closure of all fairground rides until additional safety inspections are carried out.
The governor’s office was ‘terribly saddened by this accident, by the loss of life and that people were injured enjoying Ohio’s fair.’
"The fair is about the best things in life, and tonight with this accident it becomes a terrible, terrible tragedy," Kasich said.
State director of agriculture David Daniels said the ride passed its mandatory inspection ahead of the opening of the state fair.
State fair officials said it would be open to the public today but individual rides would only be reopened after new inspections are completed.
The fair runs through August 6.
