One in five flights to Spain to be grounded
Passengers flying to and from Spain tomorrow are expected to suffer severe delays and disruptions to their flights due to a 24-hour strike by Spanish workers, which is expected to ground at least 20% of European flights.
British Airways is giving passengers due to fly tomorrow the option of cancelling their flights with a full refund or re-booking for another date.
National carrier Iberia said it would operate 35% of its flights tomorrow and advised passengers to turn up at the airport earlier than usual.
Ryanair has announced it will be operating hand-luggage only flights to Spain. Passengers who had booked check-in luggage will be given refunds, it said.
At the same time, Ryanair has called on the European Commission to act to prevent further air traffic control strikes. The airline was forced to cancel 250 flights last week due to a walk-out by French ATC.
Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said: “Action must be taken at EU level to ensure that the ‘right to strike’ is removed from essential services such as ATC and competition must be introduced across Europe’s ATC providers to ensure that a strike in one country is not be allowed to disrupt million of passengers’ travel plans.”
All airlines flying to and from Spain tomorrow have advised passengers to check their websites for flight updates before travelling to the airport.
