Operators monitor attacks in Sri Lanka
Tour operators are monitoring the situation in the tourist city of Galle after a suicide attack by Tamil Tiger rebels.
Adventure specialist, Explore, said it was saddened by reports that at least 90 navy personnel were feared dead and that a second attack has taken place in the Southern city.
It currently has two tours in Sri Lanka.
Director Derek Moore said: “We are of course saddened by the tragic news. For the moment, our tours will continue to operate, but we are in close contact with our ground agents and are monitoring Foreign Office advice closely. We will review the situation should there be any further developments.”
“We have continued to support Sri Lanka over the years – through wartime and the tsunami – and we don’t intend to stop supporting our friends there now.”
The Tamil Tigers are fighting for an independent homeland in the north and east of Sri Lanka, claiming that ethnic Tamils have suffered discrimination at the hands of Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese majority.
The Foreign Office advises against all travel to the north or east of Sri Lanka and has advised anyone in those areas to leave at the first available opportunity.
