Orange alert faces visitors to USA
United States: Extra security at airports, tourist attractions closed
Anyone visiting the United States in the near future is likely to find much of the country in a strange state of limbo since security authorities imposed an “orange alert”.
Because of a perceived increased risk of terror, the Department of Justice raised the level of alert from yellow to orange earlier this month, in the wake of new intelligence reports.
As well as having their progress through airports slowed by extra security, visitors are likely to find many tourist attractions closed; in Washington many of the city’s monuments including the White House, the Pentagon and the FBI building have been closed to the public.
At airports, according to the Daily Telegraph, there are new parking restrictions, searches of vehicles and random screening of passengers, while all check-in baggage has been searched by hand since new rules were introduced on 31 January.
