Orlando airport still closed after storm

Saturday, 06 Sep, 2004 0

Orlando Airport remains closed today – though Miami International is operational once again – as Florida counts the cost of Hurricane Frances, which lashed the southern US state over the weekend.

As many as five million people are thought to be without electricity after the Frances, which has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, moves into the Gulf of Mexico. Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports were reopened yesterday – with Virgin Atlantic running two flights to Miami – but Orlando, as well as airports in 10 other cities, remains closed, Sky News reports.

The website states that British Airways is expected to operate two flights from Heathrow to Miami today. As many as 6,000 British holidaymakers are thought to still be stranded in Florida.

The BBC News website reports that nearly three million people were forced to leave their homes to avoid the hurricane; two people are known to have died in accidents related to the storm.

There are now mass evacuations taking place in northwest Florida amid fears that Frances could intensify again, while forecasters are now looking east, where Hurricane Ivan is already creating winds of up to 120 miles per hour. Ivan is currently a few hundred miles from Barbados and heading towards the Windward Islands, the BBC reports.
