Overboard cruise passengers a mystery
At least a dozen cruise ship passengers have gone into the water or disappeared in incidents involving US ports since 2000.
“Relatives of missing passengers are pushing for more awareness of the issue as the industry grows,” said the Business Journal of Jacksonville, which came up with the figure of a dozen missing passengers.
Two of the dozen were rescued, two were confirmed dead and the eight remaining are still missing, the newspaper said.
Such occurrences are so rare they are not even tracked, said Michael Crye, president of the International Council of Cruise Lines.
The procedure for missing passengers who do not respond to intercom pages is to conduct a ship wide search, which usually turns up the missing person.
If the person is not found, the Coast Guard is notified, as well as the FBI.
