Oz authorities market Ned Kelly country
Australia: Hopes high that new film will attract tourists to region
Australian tourism authorities are hoping a new film about the famous bushranger Ned Kelly will do the same for the state of Victoria as Lord of the Rings did for New Zealand.
The new film, which is being released in Australia this week, is the sixth focussing on the famous outlaw; the most recent was in 1970 and starred Mick Jagger. And Tourism Victoria has now launched a publicity campaign aimed at enticing visitors to “Ned Kelly Country”, where he lived in the late 19th century.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, visitors can follow a Ned Kelly trail, starting at his birthplace in Beveridge to the Old Melbourne Jail where he was executed in 1880. The house where he was born still exists and there are various museums around the area, displaying memorabilia associated with Kelly.
