Cashiers from the Eiffel Tower go on trial next month

Ten cashiers from Paris’s famous Eiffel Tower will be in court nest month, accused of stealing around a million euros from the attraction.

As reported by News From Abroad last year, the shortfall came to light when the tower’s management came up with a new system to reduce queues, and discovered that there was a large difference between the number of tickets that had been issued and those that had been paid for.

Today’s edition of The Guardian quotes a police spokesman thus: “It seems what was happening was that the tower’s computerised ticketing system, which was repeatedly breaking down, was actually being turned off manually by some unscrupulous cashiers. A number of tickets supposedly destroyed during the breakdowns were in fact sold in clandestine negotiations out of sight of the supervisors.”

The newspaper states that the Eiffel Tower is the only major tourist attraction in Paris to make a profit – despite the best efforts of its ticket sellers!
