Partners sought for Turkey project

Partners are being sought for a bilateral initiative to develop tourism in one of the more remote regions of Turkey, eastern Anatolia.

The effort is being funded by the EU and organised by the Turkish authorities, in an effort to increase visitor numbers to an area that has “remarkable” potential for the future.

Ian Lyne, tourism and environment team leader for the project, told delegates at last week’s Travel Turkey 2004 conference and exhibition that he was looking to identify “investors, industry partners and business angels” in order to develop the region as a destination.

He explained that while there are already significant numbers visiting the region, they tend to stay for just one or two nights and spend little because they are often travelling on a pre-paid tour with little opportunity to spend money locally.

He said: “We want to increase that average stay to around four of five nights by developing the region’s attractions to add value for visitors. There are a wealth of fantastic attractions – the region has cultural attractions, aquatic capabilities, and a vast range of potential outdoor activities on offer – but we have to admit that many of these areas need extensive development, which we hope will be carried out via this programme.”

Lyne added: “We are now looking to identify investors, partners and business angels to help us to develop the region’s tourism capabilities, which we believe are remarkable indeed.”
