Passengers back smoking bans on ships

Cruise passengers are supporting stricter smoking policies on board ships.

Last week Royal Caribbean announced that it was extending its interior smoking ban to all public spaces with the exception of casinos.

The use of cigarettes, cigars and other smoking products on balconies will also be forbidden from January 1, 2014, apart from Asia-based ships.

More than half of cruisers feel that smoking should be banned from balconies, and just under a quarter believe that it should be banned everywhere, according to a poll carried out by review site, Cruise Critic.

54% agreed that smoking shouldn’t be permitted on balconies and 24% said it should be banned on all areas of a cruise ship.

Only 18% of respondents disagreed with the ban saying it was a personal choice.

Disney Cruise Line,Cunard Line and Seabourn have also made similar changes to their smoking policies.

Adam Coulter, UK editor of Cruise Critic, said: "However, whilst a large number of cruisers support this ban, it’s important to acknowledge that many feel they should be offered a choice. With certain cruise lines adapting their policies, it will be interesting to see the impact this has across the industry within the future."
