Passengers leap into the sea during Thai ferry fire
Dozens of people have been saved after leaping into the sea when a huge fire ripped through a Thai ferry.
The Ko Jaroen 2 ship was carrying 108 passengers and crew, many of them tourists, to the popular holiday island of Koh Tao.
All those who jumped into the water were rescued.
Luckily, the overnight ferry from Surat Thani to Koh Tao was almost at its destination and help was quickly mobilised.
According to passengers, the flames engulfed the ferry within minutes.
It was a vehicle ferry carrying some cars, motorbikes and trucks.
“We could barely get the life vests in time. It was chaotic,” passenger Maitree Promjampa told the AP.
Kritphet Chaichuai, the head of the Marine Department said the incident happened about two nautical miles from Koh Tao.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
