Southwest Airlines has reportedly handed out checks for $5,000 to passengers on Flight 1380, which killed one after an engine explosion.

CNN reports at least three passengers have received checks accompanied with a letter expressing ‘sincere apologies’ for the incident which had been earlier described by a passenger as ’25 minutes of sustained fear.’

A letter addressed to passenger Kamau Siwatu said: "We value you as our customer and hope you will allow us another opportunity to restore your confidence in Southwest as the airline you can count on for your travel needs. n this spirit, we are sending you a check in the amount of $5,000 to cover any of your immediate financial needs."

CNN says at least two others received similar letters.

In addition to the checks, passengers get a $1,000 travel voucher.

The NTSB said cracks found on a fan blade was more than likely due to metal fatigue.

The agency is still investigating and may not release a full report for up to a year.

Flying debris from the engine damaged the fuselage and shattered a window.

Passenger Jennifer Riordan was almost sucked out of the aircraft and later died of her injuries.
