Pattaya touts monorail to curb congestion

Although it may seem like a ghost right now inThai tourism hotspot Pattaya, authorities are sure the good times will return.

With the return of tourists comes inevitable congestion on the roads, something that has blighted the resort city for years.

Pattaya City Council is undeterred by the Covid-19 pandemic and has announced its latest scheme to cut traffic – a new monorail system.

It outlined proposals for a nine kilometre monorail route to ease chronic congestion.

It would run from the railway station to the Bali Hai Pier.

Funding for a feasibility study has been allocated.

"An efficient system will be in high demand after the Covid-19 crisis eases, which will see an influx of tourists return to the city," said deputy mayor Manote Nongyai.

Pattaya has a wealth of potential for economic development, it has been plagued with traffic problems caused by rapid urban growth."

Only a few months ago, a proposal was mooted for a light rail system but this seems to have been discarded in favour of a monorail.

It is still very early days and the city council didn’t give any expected timeline for construction if it gets approval, or the likely project cost.
