Peace through tourism makes progress

At the recent annual general meeting of the Australian Chapter of the International Institute for Peace through Tourism, president Daphne Lowe Kelley provided an update on IIPT’s activities and achievements.

She also paid tribute to the outgoing committee, in particular to Secretary/Treasurer Faye Alexander and Vice President Marilyn Readhead, who did not seek re-election and welcomed Jaqui Preketes, assistant manager of Touchdown Tours, as the new vice president.

Lowe Kelley’s report referred to the continuing success of the graduate Peace Through Tourism course offered at Sydney University, the third IIPT Australian conference, the participation of Australian members at the African conference in Uganda and the ongoing efforts to spread the message to the industry, which has resulted in the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO) becoming a new member.

She also mentioned how pleased she was to be invited to the installation (on 9 November 2007) of Dr Omar Moufakkir as Lector Tourism for Peace, CHN University, Leeuwarden, Netherlands.

This is the first dedicated Tourism for Peace Lectureship in the world, an acknowledgement of the work of Louis D’Amore, IIPT’s founder and president, who was also present.

Members of the new committee are: Daphne Lowe Kelley (President), Jaqui Preketes (Vice President), Gail Parsonage (Secretary/Treasurer) and executives: Dr Freya Higgins-Desbiolles, Nimalan Karthikeyan, Ian Kelly, Mia Nahm and Georgina Pickers.
