Phuket tourists in chlorine scare
A weekend incident involving chlorine at a Phuket resort which led to 37 people – most of them tourists – being treated at hospitals on the island was not, as first reported, “a blast”.
It is believed staff at the Phuket Orchid Resort and Spa in Karon, south of Patong, wrongly used full strength chlorine in the resort’s swimming pool instead of diluting it first.
Twenty-six tourists, including children, and 11 Thais, were taken to Patong hospitals for emergency treatment.
Most were treated for a burning sensation in their lungs caused by chlorine gas and later released.
