Pilot dies in cockpit minutes before landing
An American Airlines pilot has died after collapsing in the cockpit just minutes before landing at Albuquerque.
Flight 1353 from Dallas Fort Worth was just two miles out of Albuquerque when the captain announced a medical emergency.
The Boeing 737 was able to land safely with all passengers disembarking normally.
First officer William Grubbs was pronounced dead after airport paramedics gave CPR without success for 40 minutes, American Airlines spokeswoman Polly Tracey said.
"On behalf of the entire American Airlines family, we are deeply saddened by the death of First Officer William ‘Mike’ Grubbs. We are taking care of first officer Grubbs’ family and our hearts and prayers are with them during this difficult time," she said.
The incident happened the same day news of another similar mid-flight emergency was revealed in Europe.
A report was released detailing how a flight attendant stepped in to assist the pilot and performed pre-landing safety checks on a TUIfly plane over Germany after the co-pilot collapsed with low blood pressure.
The incident came to light when the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation published a report of the October 2016 incident.
