Plane crashes into hotel in Indonesia

At least 141 died when a military plane crashed into a hotel in Indonesia.

The 50-year-old Hercules  C-130 aircraft, with an estimated 122  people onboard, hit the roof of the hotel in the city of Medan in North Sumatra as it was trying to return to the airport just minutes after taking off.

It then ploughed into the newly-built residential area of the city, killing at least 19 people on the ground.

Officials said the pilot had reported a technical problem and eye-witnesses said the aircraft flew low over a residential area several times before striking the roof of the hotel and bursting into flames.

Rescuers are still pulling bodies from the wreckage and trying to reach people believed to be trapped inside damaged buildings.
