Planes collide on Manchester runway
Two aircraft collided on the runway at Manchester airport yesterday afternoon as they were taxiing for take-off.
While there were no injuries among the 300-plus passengers on board the two planes, an urgent investigation has been launched.
According to The Guardian, the incident took place at 16.30 yesterday, well away from terminal buildings.
The two aircraft involved were a Bmibaby Boeing 737 heading for Belfast with 74 passengers and five crew on board, and an Excel Airways Boeing 767 that was due to fly to Goa, India. The Excel plane had 264 people on board.
A spokesman for Manchester airport is quoted as saying: “The tail of the 737 and the wing of the Excel 767 aircraft were in collision while both aircraft were on the ground as both were preparing to depart.
“All the passengers were taken off the aircraft. They are fine – but obviously they will be offered support if they need it. The Air Accident Investigation Branch is investigating how this happened.”
