Plans announced to build airport in Tulum
Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced a new airport is in the works for Tulum.
AMLO gave no specific details or a timeline for construction but stressed the need for Quintana Roo to revive the tourism industry.
"Quintana Roo is one of the fastest growing states. I can tell you that the new Tulum airport will be built," he said.
In conjunction with the planned Maya train project, a new airport will help reinvigorate the tpurist economy, the President said.
The Maya train is expected to be completed in 2022, and will connect Tulum to the Gulf of Mexico coast via Palenque, Chiapas.
Plans for a new airport had been floated a decade ago but was shelved, and the announcement even took officials in Quintana Roo by surprise.
Noted for its ancient ruins, Tulum itself now attracts about two million visitors a year.
Currently travelers headed direct to Tulum fly into Cancun International Airport, which is about 90 minutes away by car.
