Polluting factories being shut down ahead of Shanghai Disney opening
City officials in Shanghai will shut down dozens of polluting factories to improve air quality ahead of the opening of the new multi-billion dollar Disney theme park.
A statement said 153 company sites, mainly involved in the machinery, chemical and textile industries, would be closed down by the end of 2016 in the Zhoupu area, near the Disney park.
The companies have been described as ‘high polluting, high consumption and low efficiency.’
The Shanghai economic agency then plans to redevelop the sites as part of a ‘beautiful countryside’ project focused on agriculture-related tourism, the statement said.
