Portland hotel hit by payment card data breach

Friday, 07 Nov, 2016 0
A historic Portland, Oregon, hotel has warned guests of a data breach of payment card information.

An investigation was conducted last month after guests of Sentinel Hotel noted unauthorized activity of their cards after using them at the hotel.

After instructing an IT security firm to investigate, the hotel discovered malware on one of its font desk payment terminals.

"The program could have copied payment card data – including cardholder name, payment card account number, card expiration date, and verification code," the company says in a message on its website.

It may have affected transactions between July 12 and October 3, 2016.

"Sentinel has stopped this incident, and we continue to work with the computer security firm to further strengthen the security of our systems to help prevent this from happening again.  We also notified law enforcement and will continue to support their investigation."

The Sentinel will notify cardholders in writing who it believes used the compromised payment terminal.

The storied downtown Portland hotel dates back to 1909 and was designated a National Historic Landmark.
