Potential new owners for Baha Mar touted

The quest to find a buyer for the long stalled Baha Mar mega resort development could be nearing its conclusion, according to a Bahamas tourism official.

Joy Jibrilu of Bahamas Tourism said several interested parties have held discussions with the government.

"As one potential party said to me: ‘Everything is in place, it’s 97% completed and all approvals are in place.’  And this is something that is very attractive," Jibrilu told the Caribbean Journal.

Prime Minister Perry Christie had said finding an owner to complete the project was ‘the highest priority’ for the government.

The huge casino resort was slated to open in 2014 but suffered multiple delays and eventual bankruptcy amid a damaging dispute between the resort developer and construction company.

The resort was to feature a casino, golf course and four hotels comprising more than 2,000 rooms.

"Every effort is being made by the government to work with the stakeholders to achieve remobilization, completion and opening as soon as possible during the course of this year," Christie told delegates during the recent CHTA Marketplace conference.
