Princess ship captain dies during cruise
The captain of a Princess Cruises ship has died at sea.
Captain Michele Bartolomei was skipper of the Diamond Princess cruise ship, currently on a 19-day cruise in Asia.
The cruise line said he passed away onboard the ship this week.
It followed a medical emergency while the ship was in Taiwan on May 19.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei, who had a sudden medical emergency,” Princess Cruises said.
“Captain Bartolomei was a respected leader, with decades of service.”
“Our hearts are with Captain Bartolomei’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Guests aboard the ship have been informed of the captain’s death.
Captain Salvatore Macera is in charge for the remainder of the cruise.
Captain Macera said in a letter to guests: “Our commitment to your safety and the smooth operation of this voyage remains our utmost priority.”
The cruise ends in Yokohama, Japan on May 25.
Bartolomei had been with Princess Cruises for 30 years.
