Pub puts game on the menu for meetings
A country pub in West Sussex run by a former chef at the Ritz in London is seeking to attract the meetings sector.
The Earl of March in East Lavant near Chichester has opened a 16th Century Old Bake House as The Game Shack to attract private parties and groups looking for an authentic winter dining experience.
The room, which seats up to 12 people, will offer a seasonal menu of local game, prepared by Giles Thompson, former executive chef at the Ritz.
Traditionally decorated with artefacts, The Game Shack is named in honour of Edward VII’s favourite shoot, the 2,000-acre King’s Walk Shoot at nearby West Dean.
Thompson, whose idea it was to create The Game Shack, said: “Game is in its prime over these months and The Game Shack is an ideal environment in which to sample it with family, friends or even for small business meetings.”
He added: “We wanted to create a feeling of warmth and conviviality with The Game Shack, a house party without the hassle of preparing and serving but with the atmosphere of a winter gathering at home.
“Our emphasis is on the freshest local produce served in an innovative yet traditional way, letting the ingredients speak for themselves.”
Set menus can be tailored for groups and dishes paired with suitable wines and digestifs.
Dishes available include terrine of game with fig chutney; truffled game broth and pan seared loin of New Forest venison with chive mash and roasted roots.
