Putting the wind in your sails
Peter Island Resort & Spa in BVI after years of study has become the first there to install wind turbines in the Virgin Island territory, according to the resort.
“These new state-of-the-art turbines are not only environmentally friendly but also energy efficient, which makes them an ideal option for this geographic location,” said CEO Van Andel.
He says benefits include the environment and the resort’s cost structure.
The resort has installed two wind turbines. The system is monitored by a computer program via the Internet, which adjusts output based on activity and tracks consumption.
Andel says the turbines will help the resort decrease its fuel consumption by 25 percent and its overall carbon footprint by 75 percent.
The system is a first step towards a greener Peter Island, officials said.
“Additionally, there will be more immediate improvements in guest services,” said a news release.
An advantage of the system is that it will provide a consistent electrical supply, negating disruptions in guest services that can happen in the Caribbean.
