Qantas, Cathay big winners in wine awards
Qantas has taken out Best First Class Cellar and Best Business Class Cellar at the Business Traveller 2010 Cellars in the Sky Awards in London.
Cathay Pacific won two awards for its business-class offerings, triumphing in the Best Business Class Red Wine (Spy Valley Pinot Noir Marlborough 2007, NZ), and Best Business Class Cellar categories.
Other notable performers were LAN Airlines and Qatar Airways.
Qantas also won awards for Consistency of Wines Across Business and First Class, Best First Class White (the Wigan Eden Valley Riesling 2004), First Class Red (Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2006) and First Class Sparkling (Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 1999), collecting a total of six out of the 15 awards.
Commenting on this year’s entries, Charles Metcalfe, TV wine presenter and co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge, said there had been some pleasant surprises, with a number of unusual choices, perhaps reflective of the economic situation.
“Airlines are having to be more creative with their wine choices,†said Metcalfe.
“Rather than choosing an expensive and well-known label, they are choosing lesser-known but much more interesting wines.â€
