Qantas ditching Beijing flights from Sydney
Qantas is scrapping its Sydney-Beijing route in March, citing weak business class demand and intense competition from China based rivals.
Qantas had relaunched the route in 2017 but cut back capacity a year later from daily service to five a week.
"Our flights to Beijing have been underperforming for some time due to weaker demand as well as a big increase in capacity from other airlines," said Qantas International chief executive Tino La Spina.
However Qantas will continue flying to Shanghai.
"China is a significant market for Qantas and our direct services from and to Shanghai are performing well. With Beijing, we’re responding to what the market is telling us," La Spina added.
It partners with China Eastern Airlines at Shanghai.
It will move the Airbus A330 capacity to other profitable routes in Asia.
